Fishing Lures

Fishing lures are mostly used in recreational fishing. They are objects attached at the end of the line and they are designed to look like the prey of the fish that you want to catch. The methods of attracting the fish consists of such aspects as color, shape, movement and vibration. If there were no lures attached to the lines, the bait could pass unnoticed by the fish. All fishing lures have a hook at the end onto which fishermen attach the bait. This hook also has the purpose of impaling the fish when it attacks the bait.
Lures can also help fishermen look for and actually find the places where fish may be hiding. This is done by casting and retrieving the lures progressively, and such movements make the lures appear to be swimming. The movement of the lure will also make light reflect and thus attract the attention of the fish.
Fishing lures fall into several categories depending on the design and the purpose they serve. A first type is the jig, a lead hook with a sharp tip onto which we attach the natural or artificial bait, this is usually shaped like a minnow, worm or crawfish. Another category consists of the surface fishing lures that got their names because they are lighter than the jigs and therefore meant to float on the water and look like surface prey. The spoon lures are also for surface fishing; they are thin and shiny so that they can get fish attention as quickly as possible.
Another category is that of plugs or crankbaits; these fishing lures are designed to move at faster speeds and to go back and forth exactly as fish prey would. Flies and bass worms are two more types of fishing lures artificially made and widely used nowadays.
As for popularity, fishing lures have been with human beings since the beginnings of history. What has changed about them is that today they have become artificial; they are made of plastic, wood, metal, rubber or cork. In a way, this seems to be better for the environment as the bait species required to catch the fish we tend to consume more would not become endangered; consequently, the food chain will remain unaltered if regular living baits are not used extensively.
Another advantage of today’s fishing lures is that they encourage recreational fishing without causing death of caught and released fish. The hooks that today’s fishing lures are provided with are not very dangerous for the fish and do not impale the mouth as deep as the old type hooks used to. Therefore, more and more fish survive after being released by recreation interested fishermen.

Fishing Boats

A fishing boat used in catching big game fish should be an angler’s best friend. If fishing as a sport appeals to you and buying a boat is part of the plan, then you may look for the smaller-sized ones not larger than twenty feet. Boats should be reliable, however, as they are meant to help you withstand bad weather at sea and they should provide speed and safety to you or your crew. A larger fishing boat reaching up to 100 feet in size may transport many more anglers than a small boat could, perhaps even thirty crew members.
Even though owning a fishing boat may be appealing, very few people go for buying one. Most anglers prefer to rent a boat, get to the fishing areas and return it when they get back on land. Having your own fishing boat with all the required electronic equipment for orientation and location may turn up very expensive. In addition to renting the boat, most anglers also hire a crew or captain who knows the fishing grounds very well and can easily direct them to an area where the looked for type of fish live. Even so, only the equipment and the hiring of the boat may cost pretty much for a regular middle class angler to afford. That is why joining a fishing expedition on a fishing boat is a prerogative for wealthier anglers.
As far as the fishing boat types are concerned, vessels come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are intended for commercial use while others are meant for recreational fishing only. The first type of fishing boat ever used by a human being looked more like a canoe that could not go far from the shore. Nowadays, our technologies have developed a great deal and boats have increased in size and scope as well. The commercial fishing boat, for example, can really impress the viewer in terms of its size and the amount of caught fish volume it can store.
The most well known type of fishing boat used for commercial purposes is the trawler that is equipped with many nets so as to maximize the volume of the capture. Other types of boats include drifters, longliners, seiners, factory ships and so on. They are built in such standard modes and according to common manufacturing procedures that they are virtually risk free for the crew. The recreational fishing boat also comes in various shapes and sizes that include kayaks, charters, a pontoon or flounder boats. Presently, many people choose to buy a boat for leisure activities rather than for fishing.

Deep Sea Fishing

Even though this term might make you think of ocean fishing, deep sea fishing refers to that which is performed in waters as large as or larger than lakes. Rivers and ponds are not meant for deep sea fishing as the water may not be deep enough. Generally speaking this type of fishing is carried out near coasts where there are a lot of large fish.
Deep sea fishing requires bigger boats for the operation in order to transport and maneuver the catch. Such a boat should have enough room for the crew meant to carry out the fishing and also for the equipment needed in order to catch and store the big fish. It should be the type of boat intended to resist strong winds and bad weather at sea and to transport the crewmen towards the fishing area fast and safely.
The wide range of fish that is caught in deep sea fishing includes marlins, swordfish, sailfish, large tunas and various types of sharks. There are also smaller types of fish species caught at the same time with these large ones; however, the latter ones are not the real intended game. These come as a by catch or, if caught intentionally, they are meant to be turned into bait for the larger fishes.
Deep sea fishing has been carried out in mainly the same areas throughout time since this occupation became known and later it turned into a business. It is done in California, Florida, north of New Zealand, in Nova Scotia, Hawaii and so on. One of the advantages of those areas is that large fish live close to the coasts and it does not take a long time to get to these places.
Deep sea fishing involves several techniques out of which the first to mention is trolling, that is, angling by drawing a baited line through the water. The bait usually resembles squid or other smaller fish regularly used for bait and it is thrown behind the boat. The stabilizers behind the boat also called outriggers work great in spreading and enlarging the area designed for catching the fish. Another technique is the chumming or chunking which requires that large pieces of bait fish be thrown overboard in order to attract the larger wanted species.

Recreation Sports- Fishing

Sport fishing receives the best of definitions when contrasted to commercial fishing: this is an activity that demands nothing for the pleasure it gives in return. The sheer leisure pursuit, this is the main trait of sport fishing, as it has nothing to do with profit or survival issues.
Most frequently, all you need for sport fishing is a rod, a line, a reel, plenty of hooks and a wide variety of baits. Of course there are other additional devices, called terminal tackle, that people use so as to alter or complete the way the bait attracts fish. Among the terminal tackle items used in both commercial and sport fishing swivels, weights and floats should be mentioned first. Sometimes, instead of baits fishermen rely on different types of lures, from artificial flies to plastic worms and other hand-crafted items that make fishing a lot more rewarding.
Although initially a field dominated by males, nowadays more and more women are taking part to sport fishing events. Some feel frustrated about the way things stand in the fishing circles and the big question refers to the lack of apparent purpose for the sport. Why fish if you are going to release the catch anyway? And yet, this is the whole idea behind sport fishing. It is a catch and release type of activity/hobby, plus, relaxation and fun are the very elements that define the sport.
There are different ways of doing sport fishing. The reasons why people have come up with this diversity were mainly invented to challenge their abilities and to play the game on the fish’s ground. Thus, you should know that some of the sport fishing varieties include kayak fishing, big-game fishing, trout tickling and noodling. For example, in kayak fishing people fish from stealthy sea kayaks that allow fishermen to reach areas that are unfishable from either land or from other, conventional boats. In big-game fishing the action occurs from boats, too, and the aim is to get to catch large open-water fishes such as tuna, marlin or sharks. Anyway, sport fishing contests involve individuals when they occur from land and teams when they are run from boats.
Regarding the beginnings of sport fishing, it is known that it started off sometime in the 16th and 17th centuries, but big-game fishing obviously developed as a sport after the motorized boats were invented. In 1898, the marine biologist, Dr. Charles Frederick Holder put the basis for this sport and published a number of books and articles that cover a nice combination of exciting stories and accurate scientific details.
